I have always wanted to post these photos. I have held onto them for a very long time and I am so happy that I can share them now. They are truly some of my favorites. Select photos from this post have previously been published in Katy Magazine.

October 12, 2011Inspirational Purchaseables and Viewables
July 26, 2011I posted a while back that I was going to be doing more writing in my blogging. I am going to be sharing more of what’s going on with me and how I work. The first post in many to follow is going to be about things that inspire me. This post in itself has gotten to be pretty large so I am going to break it up into three separate posts. The first one is going to cover magazines. I love magazines.
First, Southern Weddings.
This is by far my most used source for blog inspiration. I love this magazine! Their use of actual for hire photographers and not so much commercial (only hire-able by publications) photographers is fantastic. The photographers they feature are always super and inspirational. I find great new blogs by looking them up online. They use real weddings and you can actually find and hire these people yourself. The layout, photography, typography, use of color, and content is a joy to look at on every single page. I feel like they inspired the second half of my shoot with Alex a lot.
Dislike: It’s quarterly
Second, GQ.
GQ is such an inspiration to me. (Click here to see what I mean) The cleanliness of the design and uniformity of the entire magazine is great. I love picking up this publication for new ideas for headshots, fashion work, and lighting techniques. Their photographers are all incredible and it is an extremely creative magazine, one I would LOVE to contribute to one day! How come women’s magazines can’t look this clean and put together? Here are the rest of the photos inspired by GQ. Jonathan.
Dislike: Also quarterly
Third, Traditional Home.
This is a magazine that I have countless copies of. It is exactly my style and as the times and styles change so do they. I have never not been inspired while flipping through this book. Once again beautifully sophisticated typography and graphic design makes perusing the photography a delight. I read through the same issues again and again despite the feeling of failure that washes over me as I realize “They have way more money than me and I want a house like that.” Traditional Home is a great source of ideas for photographing families in their own homes. This magazine inspired a lot of the work I did for the local magazine I was working for. I do not have direct access to those photos, but once I do I will share them.
Dislike: Also also quarterly. I suppose it must take a couple months to put together such fantastic publications.
Come back to the blog tomorrow when I will talk about inspirational websites. Places I go on the internet to see other people’s photos that make me want to go out and shoot!
We have been talking about blogging a lot at work lately… specifically about having expert bloggers. I have been invited to blog about photography related subjects and I have come up with a short list. I can blog about:
Free photo editing websites
Free photo hosting sites – comparing
Free photography learning sites
YouTube, Flickr, Other Blogs, etc.
Copyright information
Online photo labs – comparing
Photo products such as books, magazines, stickers, cards, etc.
This is all I have come up with so far. I would like for you, my audience, all 10 of you, to leave me a comment to let me know what you would like to see on the blog. We need lots of topics to fill up this brand new blog! I know people seem to really like my tutorials, and I like doing them, but we are going to keep it simple on this new blog. It is going to be aimed at the Mom-tographer, the hobbyist. It will be easy to understand, fun, informative, and hopefully very interactive. Thank You for your participation and I’ll see you on the blog!
